Abstract

The present study aimed to examine the mediating role of academic engagement in the relationship between family functioning and successful intelligence. The study was applied in terms of its purpose and employed a descriptive-correlational research design. The statistical population consisted of female upper-secondary students in Shiraz, Iran, from whom 592 students were selected using multistage random cluster sampling. Data were collected using the Family Functioning Questionnaire, the Academic Engagement Scale, and the Successful Intelligence Assessment Instrument. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) with SPSS version 26 and AMOS version 24. The findings indicated that family functioning was positively and significantly associated with academic engagement, and academic engagement was also positively and significantly associated with successful intelligence. Furthermore, family functioning had a direct and significant association with successful intelligence. However, the indirect effect of family functioning on successful intelligence through academic engagement was not statistically significant. Overall, the findings indicated that although family functioning and academic engagement were directly associated with successful intelligence, academic engagement did not play a statistically significant mediating role in the relationship between family functioning and successful intelligence. This finding highlights the importance of considering individual, family, and educational factors in understanding students’ successful intelligence.
