Predicting Social Skills and Self-Control Based on Parenting Styles in Youths with Visual Impairment

Abstract

The aim of this study was to predict social and self-control skills based on parenting styles in youths with visual impairment. The research method was descriptive-correlational. The sample of this study was 110 young visual impaireds aged 18 to 40 years who were selected by purposive sampling method. Research instruments included EMBU-S Perceived Parenting Styles Questionnaire (2014), Kashani Motlagh Self-Control Questionnaire (2014) and Matson et al. (1983) Social Skills Scale. Findings showed that parenting styles in the dimension of rejection and emotional intimacy have a positive and significant relation with the dimension of inhibiting (negative) self-control. Dimension of increasing supportiveness in parenting style in the dimension of primary (positive) self-control has a negative and significant relation and with inhibiting (negative) self-control and general self-control showed a positive and significant relation. Also, the correlation between total parenting styles with the dimension of preventive (negative) self-control and total self-control showed a positive and significant relationship. In addition, the results showed that among the dimensions of parenting styles, the dimension of incsreasing supportiveness has a significant relationship with the dimension of antisocial behaviors. According to the results, it can be said that one of the important factors that can affect self-control and social skills in visual impaired people is parenting style. Therefore, it is possible to increase parents' awareness of parenting styles through mass media, holding conferences and family education workshops, etc
